Oh wow, you have considerably more training than myself. You should be fine to bend a 707 on your first go. Aside from cutting clock lines, most of the mods are soldering to the components on the board. You should be fine to build some clock oscillators and the rest that goes along with it. Glad you said something. I am never sure of folks technical abilities when they write in. It is a difficult balance between giving a "dad lecture" and bolstering enthusiasm for those that know what they are doing. I agree, I still hate working with SMD components but it seems to be a necessary evil at this point in the game. You seem smart, so just do your endless forum plunging, print out some good guides, and you should be off to the races :) If you get stuck with a part of it, give me a shout and I will at least try to walk you thru it if needed.

And I totally hear ya about online sales. After years in the buyselltrade world, I always say every year that it is my last lol. People are self-centered flakes. I always joke that people don't care about anything that doesn't shove money in their face or isn't attached to their genitalia lol. A lot of the fun I have in sales is seeing that Christmas morning look when they are excited about their purchase. Many of the recent sales have been some turd trying to whittle another 20 bux off of a deal because they "drove all this way for my grandkids keyboard" blah blah (they are 23 years old lol). One of the reasons I hate money. It makes people act completely out of character.

I can attest to both cases. The 707 is a bit pricey for a first time circuit bend. If you mess up, 450 euros is (at least to me) nothing to sneeze at. The 707 has some good bends as far as pitch for each drum and has the luxury of having faders for each drum sound already there and is a classic to boot :) Lots of room inside for mounting bends.

The 505 is a great first time bender :) There are a LOT of documented bends on burnkit2600 and circuitbenders.co.uk. It is a fun machine and is easy to program. I have bent several of these over the years. You will want an LTC1799 oscillator for the pitch crystal. The bends themselves mainly consist of scrambling the data lines with the lil drum beat snippets in them so you get weird or syncopated rhythms. Some good distortion and such as well as volume outs for each drum iirc. The only caveat is there is not much room insi de the 505 to mount bends, so you may want an external case for controls etc. I have shoehorned things in the body though as well.

I would also like to mention the Yamaha RX-8. It is an odd duck but pretty much Yam's answer to the 505. It is easy to program and super easy to circuit bend. Probably the same price as a 505 minus 10 bux or so. These bend well and have great squelchy FM modulations. I have one with a 21 point patch bay that plugs into the machine with an LPT printer cable. Backlit display as well.

I always use ebay and search for "sold listings" and "Europe" as region, to get a price overview.
