It may be that my pedal is faulty then as it is indeed a vfp2. I have another one that I have not tried yet as I assumed it was the pedal that was the wrong model. I shall try the other one tonight and see if it works better / differently. Maybe I just need new pedals!! I had not used these in a while.
" A-177 is compatible with the footcontrollers FP5 and double foot switch VFP2 (see Accessories ). The Foot controller and double foot switch are not included with the module but have to be ordered in addition. If you want to use another foot controller or foot switch it has to be compatible to FP5 or VFP2. In the user's manual of the no longer available module A-177 ( A177_man.pdf ) you find the specification for these devices.If the footcontroller FP5 is used the CV output range is about 0...+8V. The gate output levels are 0/+12V in combination with the VFP2 (foot switch not operated = 0V, foot switch operated = +12V)."
The above text (taken from A-177-2 page) indicates that VFP2 is the correct model to use with the A-177 series, which is the pedal you say you are using (or was that a typo ). My assumption is that when the pedal switch is not depressed, the +12V signal is shunted to GND, and when you press the switch, the connection is broken allowing the 12V to feed the A-177-2 output. If you do have the VFP2 and your pedal is not working that way, there may be something wrong with your cable from the pedal or it may not be fully inserted into the A-177-2. There are no polarity jumpers on the 177-2 and there is no indication that the pedal can be set to work differently (without replacing the switch with normally-open). If you are using a different model of pedal, you may want to try the A-165 trigger modifier as suggested above. I did not look for a compatible pedal or source in the UK as I am unsure what pedal you are using now.

I have recently bought two A177-2s. Alas my dual foot switches that I have for other keyboards are not the right type. Only one pedal produces any effect and that is to produce a gate when released. These pedals are VPF2s. I don't want to mod them as I use them for other things. So it looks like I need to buy another couple of pedals. I'm in the UK - anyone know what and where to buy Hoping not too expensive!!
