Subject: Thoughts on my Polaris....

From: "Phidippus Audax" <mao@...>

I've been lurking on this group but never posted... I do have a
Chroma Polaris and it's in mint condition. It was given to me by a
local museum which had it tucked away in a closet for years and the
battery had long since died so they couldn't get any sounds out of it
-or else it was all initial voices. Anyhow, I traded a Crumar
Orchestrator for it, put some C cells in it, got a cassette copy of
the original voices from the original synth repair guru from EM
magazine (forget his name) and off I went. Not that I needed the
original voices, but they make a nice springboard for experimentation.
I used it for a score of Planetarium soundtracks in the 80's.
Anyway.. I'm posting because I hadn't played my Polaris in months and
was thinking I might sell it until I cranked it up and started playing
again and... well.. it's just too cool. Here's the thing. These
puppies are definitely getting old and are somewhat fragile -I'm a bit
frightened by all the failures I hear about on this forum. So.. we
need to use it. Make music. Put that music on a CD, on line...
MySpace -wherever.. And I think I'll sample my favorite patches as
well... it'll never be the same, of course, but if my Polaris goes
belly up, I'll at least have some flavor of it to screw around with.
My Polaris has only been in 2 rooms over the past 25 years but I'm
about to move again.. and you can bet I'm putting some pillows around
that puppy !!! phid/friendlyspider
