The volume offset miscalibration can affect different sounds differently.
Brighter sounds will tend to use lower volume settings, thus making them
more sensitive to miscalibration. More heavily filtered sounds will tend to
use higher volume settings, thus making them less sensitive to
miscalibration.

If this happens again, it might be worth opening the unit, and reseating any
connectors, especially power ones. Even slightly lifting (but not completely
removing) and reseating the EPROM and RAM chips in their sockets might help,
in case there's an intermittent dirty connection.
